Bryant, William Cullen
(3 nov. 1794, Cummington, Mass., EE.UU.–12 jun. 1878, N.Y.).

Poeta estadounidense. A los 17 años, Bryant compuso "Thanatopsis, meditación sobre la naturaleza y la muerte que sigue siendo su poema más conocido; influenciado por el deísmo, influyó a su vez en Ralph Waldo Emerson y Henry David Thoreau. Ejerció desde los 21 años y durante una década la abogacía, profesión que detestaba. Sus Poems [Poemas] (1821), entre los que se incluye "To an aquatic bird ["A un ave acuática] consolidaron su fama como poeta. En 1825 se radicó en Nueva York, donde fue director por más de 50 años (1829–78) del periódico Evening Post, al que transformó en portavoz de pensamiento progresista.
